Gizzard shad are quiet water fish that live in lakes, bays, and sluggish rivers. They prefer clear water, though they can tolerate high turbidity areas. Gizzard shad are filter feeders, and are one of New York's few freshwater fish that eat mostly plant material, phytoplankton, and algae.

Gizzard shad are abundant throughout the Tennessee and Chattahoochee rivers and the Mobile basin. They are much less abundant in the Choctawhatchee and Conecuh rivers. Their absence from the Escatawpa, Perdido, Yellow, and Blackwater rivers may be real or only apparent, the result of riverine sampling conducted without proper gear. The gizzard shad lives an average of four to six years. A typical gizzard shad is eight to 12 inches in length with a maximum length of 20 inches and a maximum weight of four pounds. Gizzard shad fins are silver, threadfin shad fins are more of a golden color, including their tails. As the gizzard shad grows rapidly toward adulthood, its feeding habits change and the fish move from open water to the littoral zone, where it begins rooting around on the lake or pond bottom.
